Chin implants

Chin enlargement is performed either for a receding or weak chin or in conjunction with a nose reshape operation to achieve a better profile.

What is it?
Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure to enlarge the size and enhance the shape of the chin.

What happens?
A prosthesis (implant) is inserted to lie against the front surface of the original chin via an incision inside the mouth. The operation therefore leaves no external scars.

Will I be asleep?
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

Is there any discomfort?
Surprisingly, there is little discomfort, although there will be some post-operative swelling and bruising. Medication will be prescribed for this if required.

How long does it take?
The procedure normally takes between two-three hours depending on its complexity. You can then normally return home the day following surgery.

Is there a scar?
In almost all cases there are no external scars; as the incisions are made from within the mouth.

The result
The improved shape of the chin and the balance of the face should be permanent once the wound around the implant has fully healed. Occasionally patients request that various alterations are made to the actual shape of the chin, such as producing a cleft or making a dimple. It is possible to do this in some cases.

Can the implant move?
Displacement of the implant can occur even if the implant was correctly inserted initially. Further surgery to put it back in the right place will be necessary.

Is there a chance of infection?
Infection is uncommon and usually responds to antibiotic treatment. It can lead to extrusion of the implant.

Is the lower lip effected?
Numbness of the lower lip occurs very frequently. It is usually a temporary phenomenon but on extremely rare occasions it can remain as a permanent feature.

How much will it cost?
Your best investment is an individual consultation with a surgeon you trust. Cosmetic Surgery is usually a life-time investment. Our patients are treated as individuals, and costs do vary from person to person dependant on their individual needs. However, the total cost of your procedure will be quoted at the consultation, fully inclusive with no hidden extras.

Should I have a chin implant?
Only you can answer that question. Be sure you are doing it for the right reasons: your own sense of self confidence and self esteem. No matter what anyone else thinks, if you are happy with your appearance there is no reason to have it changed. So before making that decision, attend a consultation, get the facts. Be realistic in your expectations and make an educated decision that is right for you.
